5 INCREDIBLE WALKING TRAILS

Be inspired by what the Azores have to offer.

Faial da Terra - Salto do Prego

São Miguel

This circular route in Faial da Terra begins next to the bus stop. Go up the tarmac road until you reach the fork; then go straight on along a dirt track following the left bank of the stream. Along the trail, the vegetation  becomes denser, with Incense and Acacia bushes the most predominant species.

Praia – Lagoa do Fogo

São Miguel

This linear return route to the banks of Lagoa do Fogo starts at a dirt track which gives access to cultivated fields and pastures. During the climb, you will pass the ruins of the old factory where fibres were produced from a non-endemic plant: the New Zealand Flax.

Caldeirão

Corvo

This circular route allows access to a collapse caldera at the top of the central volcano and one of the island’s main geosites. This route unfurls at an altitude between 400 and 560 metres, and should only be attempted on days with good weather and visibility. Along the trail, you are likely to come across cattle, horses and goats, which should not be disturbed.

Pico Mountain

Pico

The mountain of the Pico Volcano is located 2351 metres above sea level. The climb, approximately 5 km in length, follows duly signposted trails and paths. The climb to the peak undoubtedly affords unique contact with the force and majesty of nature, and is perfect for moments of peace and well-being, certainly making up for all the physical effort.

Chá Gorreana

São Miguel

This circular route along the tea plantations starts at the car park of the Gorreana Tea factory. When you leave the factory, head towards the access gate to the tea plants. Go left along an uphill dirt track, parallel to the road, which winds through the plantation and then the woods of Criptoméria. When you cross over a stone bridge, pastureland begins to take over from the tea and thickets.
